Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary has assured that the government will seek a judicial inquiry, as requested by the families of the deceased.

Background of the Incident

On February 13, 2025, three young men from the Gujjar community—brothers Showkat Ahmad Bajad and Riyaz Ahmad Bajad, along with their relative Mukhtar Ahmad—went missing while traveling to attend a function in Ashmuji, Kulgam. The trio, who worked as laborers, never reached their destination. Tragically, the bodies of the Bajad brothers were later recovered from the Vaishov Nallah in Kulgam; Riyaz's body was found on March 13, and Showkat's on March 16. Mukhtar Ahmad remains missing.

The mysterious deaths have sparked significant unrest and concern among the local populace. Members of both the NC and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) raised the issue in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, demanding a high-level and impartial investigation. They highlighted a pattern of unexplained deaths within the Gujjar community, referencing similar incidents in other districts. The legislators also condemned alleged police misconduct during protests by the victims' families, where mourners were reportedly subjected to force while demanding a fair investigation.

Government's Assurance

In response to the mounting pressure, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, accompanied by Health Minister Sakina Itoo and the Chief Minister’s advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, visited the bereaved family in Kulgam. Choudhary conveyed that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had directed them to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation. He announced that a judicial inquiry would be conducted to uncover the truth behind the incident and assured the family of monetary relief and other assistance.

Community's Call for Justice

The Gujjar community, alongside various political entities, continues to call for a swift and impartial investigation. The unexplained nature of the deaths has led to widespread fear and insecurity among the community members. Protests have erupted, with demonstrators blocking major highways and demanding accountability. The community emphasizes the need for justice to restore their faith in the system and ensure their safety.

Conclusion

The deaths of the Bajad brothers have not only brought personal tragedy to their family but have also highlighted broader concerns about the safety and treatment of the Gujjar community in Jammu and Kashmir. It is imperative that the investigation is conducted with utmost transparency and urgency to bring justice to the affected families and restore confidence among the community.
